Varun Vummadi, CEO of US-based Giga ML and an IIT-Kharagpur alumnus, stirred controversy with his recent remarks about Indian engineers. In a post on X, he claimed that many engineers in India are unwilling to work hard, even when offered high salaries. The CEO’s Bold Claim

Vummadi shared his hiring experience, stating that even with a base salary of ₹1 crore, many engineers with 3–8 years of experience are reluctant to work six days a week. He pointed out what he saw as a concerning trend in India’s tech workforce.

“My dad and mom are government teachers. They still work six days a week. 6×8 hours for a ₹1 crore base salary, which is significantly above benchmark for 3–8 year experienced people, is extremely fair,” he wrote.

He also cited successful entrepreneurs like Elon Musk, emphasizing that hard work plays a key role in achieving great success.
