Tech CEO’s Work Ethic Debate: Are Indian Engineers Unwilling to Work Hard?

Varun Vummadi, CEO of US-based Giga ML and an IIT-Kharagpur alumnus, stirred controversy with his recent remarks about Indian engineers. In a post on X, he claimed that many engineers in India are unwilling to work hard, even when offered high salaries. His statement ignited a heated discussion on work-life balance and productivity in the tech industry.

The CEO’s Bold Claim

Vummadi shared his hiring experience, stating that even with a base salary of ₹1 crore, many engineers with 3–8 years of experience are reluctant to work six days a week. He pointed out what he saw as a concerning trend in India’s tech workforce.

“My dad and mom are government teachers. They still work six days a week. 6×8 hours for a ₹1 crore base salary, which is significantly above benchmark for 3–8 year experienced people, is extremely fair,” he wrote.

He also cited successful entrepreneurs like Elon Musk, emphasizing that hard work plays a key role in achieving great success.

Online Reactions: Mixed Opinions

Vummadi’s comments triggered strong reactions on social media. Some agreed, arguing that a strong work ethic is essential for career growth, while others pushed back, defending work-life balance.

One user commented, “Work ethic isn’t just about hours—it’s about impact. If talented engineers hesitate despite a ₹1 crore base salary, maybe expectations don’t match modern work culture.”

Another user dismissed the idea that money alone should drive people to work longer hours. “You can’t buy cracked folks. They appreciate money, don’t worship it!”

Work Ethic vs. Work-Life Balance

The debate highlights a growing divide in the tech industry. Some believe long working hours are necessary for success, while others argue that sustainable productivity is more important.

Many modern companies focus on efficiency rather than just time spent at work. Studies have shown that overworking can lead to burnout, reduced creativity, and lower productivity. Meanwhile, some argue that putting in extra hours, especially in a competitive industry, is necessary for rapid career growth.

A Changing Work Culture

India’s work culture has evolved in recent years. Many tech professionals prioritize flexible hours, remote work, and mental well-being. Companies like Google and Microsoft encourage work-life balance, believing it leads to higher efficiency and job satisfaction.

However, startups and fast-growing tech firms often demand long hours to meet aggressive goals. Some founders believe that working six or seven days a week is essential to build a successful company.

The Bigger Question

Vummadi’s post raises an important question: Should engineers work longer hours for higher salaries, or should companies focus on sustainable productivity?

The tech industry is evolving, and so are employee expectations. While dedication and hard work are crucial, many believe success should not come at the cost of mental and physical health.

What do you think? Should engineers work six days a week for higher pay, or should companies adapt to modern work-life balance expectations?
