What to expect from AMD, Intel, and Nvidia at CES 2023
CES 2023: In preparation for covering CES 2023, I can’t help but become excited about potential announcements from AMD, Intel, and Nvidia.
Because all the leading players are entering CES after having successful years with substantial product releases, this year is particularly intriguing for chipheads.
In terms of graphics cards, Intel made its long-awaited comeback to the market in 2022 by introducing its first Arc GPUs for laptops and desktops.
While Nvidia’s pricing is a little absurd, you can’t argue that these cards aren’t the fastest available (the GeForce RTX 4000 series and the Radeon RX 7000 line, respectively), even though both Nvidia and AMD had their own new card lines premiere.
AMD and Intel will produce powerful CPUs
This year, AMD and Intel both produced powerful CPUs. The first AMD Ryzen 7000 chips went on sale in September, and it’s likely that more will follow soon.
The spirit of competitiveness is going to be in full force at CES 2023 this week because AMD released its new Ryzen 7000 chips on the same day that Intel announced its own new 13th Gen Raptor Lake CPUs.
The M2 chip from Apple will be a ghost in the halls of competitor chipmakers, even though Apple is unlikely to spend much time at CES touting its own in-house silicon efforts.
The company’s most current MacBooks broke records for performance and power efficiency thanks to Apple’s CPUs.
As the Tom’s Guide computer editor This past year, Apple’s laptops blew beyond our expectations and set some of the best times I’ve ever seen in our battery life test, and I got to watch it all unfold from the front row.
With MacBooks currently dominating the top tier of our ranking of the best laptops for battery life, I’m eager to see if Intel and AMD can achieve comparable efficiency in their laptop chips for 2023.
Let’s take a look at what AMD, Intel, and Nvidia might be bringing to the show as we go through the major chipmakers one at a time to help you understand what to expect from them at CES 2023.
AMD New Processor | CES 2023
Due in large part to the fact that AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su will be making a keynote speech on Wednesday evening (1/4, 6:30 PM PT) to help open the event, I anticipate AMD to have some really significant things to showcase at CES 2023 this year.
Most likely, we’ll get to see a few more of the company’s Ryzen 7000 series desktop CPUs up top.
These new processors use the AMD AM5 platform and TSMC’s 5-nanometer technology, so upgrading to a motherboard with an AM5 socket is necessary.
Since the company introduced the line in September with four premium processors (the Ryzen 5 7600X through Ryzen 9 7950X, priced between $299 and $699), we anticipate the introduction of additional mid-range Ryzen 7000 desktop CPUs at CES.
These CPUs will likely lack the “X” suffix and be weaker but less expensive due to their lack of the “X” suffix.
Additionally, I anticipate seeing the first batch of Ryzen 7000 laptop chips, which is really exciting for me because it will allow me to evaluate how these new chips affect battery life.
This year, as I already indicated, we witnessed some outstanding performance from laptops in our battery life testing, and it wasn’t just the case with Apple’s MacBooks.
I’m excited to see what AMD’s newest mobile CPUs will do for the battery life of laptops powered by Intel’s 13th Gen laptop chips, which appear to offer significant improvements in battery life over their predecessors.
Maybe they’ll even enhance their onboard graphics capabilities for us to see.
If we’re lucky, AMD will also reveal new GPUs from the Radeon 7000 series, albeit it’s a little early for that given that the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and XT were only released in December.
Intel: New 13th Gen CPUs | CES 2023
You may be sure that throughout CES 2023, Intel will promote its new 13th Gen CPUs. The first six Raptor Lake chips went on sale last year, and despite continuing to be produced using the same 7-nanometer manufacturing technique as its predecessors, Intel’s newest processors aren’t slow by any means.
The fastest one now available has a maximum speed of 5.8GHz, while Intel believes it will eventually introduce a Raptor Lake CPU that can run at 6GHz. Will CES be this week feature it? Although it’s possible, I’m betting on the corporation releasing more models from the mid-range Raptor Lake lineup with slower speeds and less expensive costs than what we’ve seen so far. Watch out for new Raptor Lake laptop chips as well; it seems like now would be a fantastic moment for Intel to debut those.
I’m not sure if we should anticipate hearing more about Intel’s upcoming flagship graphics card at CES 2023. In its Arc series, the company has now made a sizable number of desktop and laptop GPUs available. While it’s likely that Intel has more in store, I believe that Arc’s successor will be the next big thing.
Recall that Intel announced its plans to enter the graphics card industry in the summer of 2021, and those plans comprised many generations of GPUs. Alchemist was the codename for the initial wave, but in 2021 Intel announced Battlemage, Celestial, and Druid as the names of the following three anticipated generations of Arc GPUs.
Will hardware for Battlemage be hinted at CES 2023 now that we have seen Alchemist?
I sincerely hope so, as the GPU market needs more competition.
Nvidia: The GeForce RTX 4090 and 4080
And this is why: The GeForce RTX 4090 and 4080, which retail for $1,599 and $1,199, respectively, and are some of the most expensive graphics cards ever produced, are just what Nvidia is bringing to CES 2023.
Additionally, they are among the most powerful models ever released, which lessens the blow of paying more for a 4090 than the cost of a new PC (or numerous PS5s). Additionally, the business first unveiled a GeForce RTX 4080 with 12GB of RAM rather than 16GB for $899, which was a less costly and less potent model. The RTX 4080 12GB is a terrific graphics card, but it’s not titled appropriately, according to Nvidia, which famously decided to cancel the introduction of the GeForce RTX 4080 12GB.
Since it was less potent than the RTX 4080 16GB in a number of ways, including core count and RAM amount, many people believed it should have been given the name GeForce RTX 4070. Keep that in mind when we approach CES 2023 because I have a sneaking suspicion that this card will be brought out again under a new moniker, possibly the RTX 4070 or 4070 Ti.
GeForce RTX 40-Series Top Gaming Laptops
The GeForce RTX 40-series family’s new mobile members are also anticipated, and they’ll start to appear in the top gaming laptops that start selling in 2023.
During Nvidia’s pre-recorded “Special Address at CES 2023,” which is scheduled to air on Tuesday, January 3 (the day before AMD’s keynote, of course) at 8 AM Pacific, you’ll learn everything about whatever the firm decides to bring to CES this year.
The rest of us will be covering the event from across the globe to bring you the most up-to-date information and announcements. Tom’s Guide will have a top-notch team of editors on the ground at CES 2023 to bring you all the most crucial news live from the show.
