Union Budget 2025: Key Tech and Industry Announcements You Need to Know

The Union Budget 2025, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, introduced several initiatives aimed at boosting technology, manufacturing, and financial inclusion. With an emphasis on AI in education, broadband expansion, and insurance coverage for gig workers, the budget sets a roadmap for India’s digital and industrial growth.

From expanding the Make in India initiative to establishing National Centres of Excellence, here are the key highlights that will shape India’s economic future.

1. AI in Education and Skilling Initiatives

The government has proposed five National Centres of Excellence for Skilling, focusing on upskilling India’s workforce. Additionally, a new Centre of Excellence for AI in Education will be established with a budget of Rs. 500 crore. This initiative aims to integrate AI-driven learning solutions, modernize curriculum, and enhance student engagement.

Meanwhile, IITs set up after 2014 will receive new infrastructure investments to increase student intake by 6,500 seats.

2. Broadband Expansion Under Bharat Net

To bridge the digital divide, broadband connectivity will be expanded to all secondary schools and primary health centres across the country. This initiative, under the Bharat Net programme, will significantly improve digital accessibility, especially in rural and semi-urban areas.

Additionally, the government plans to set up over 50,000 Atal Thinking Laboratories (ATL) in government-run schools over the next five years, fostering STEM education and innovation at an early age.

3. Deeptech Fund and Trade Enhancements

A new Deeptech fund-of-funds is being explored to boost research and development in cutting-edge technologies. The PM Gati Shakti initiative’s data will also be made available to private players, enabling businesses to optimize logistics and supply chains.

Additionally, a Bharat Trade Net platform will be launched to streamline international trade, reducing bureaucratic delays and improving India’s global trade competitiveness.

4. Make in India Expansion: Manufacturing Boost

The Make in India initiative is set for a major expansion with a new manufacturing mission to boost domestic production of:

  • Grid-scale batteries
  • Solar photovoltaic (PV) cells
  • Electrolysers for green hydrogen

To support this initiative, the government has announced customs duty reductions on key components, enhancing local manufacturing capabilities. However, the Basic Customs Duty (BCD) on flat panel displays has doubled from 10% to 20%, encouraging domestic production.

5. Financial Security for Gig Workers

Over 1 crore gig workers will now be eligible for government-funded insurance, providing much-needed financial security. Additionally, registered gig workers will receive an e-Shram identity card, offering them access to various government schemes.

A new UPI-linked credit card with a Rs. 30,000 usage limit has been announced, ensuring that digital transactions become more inclusive, especially for small businesses and entrepreneurs.
