Loveyapa Movie Review: A Bold Remake or Just Another Bollywood Nepotism Project?

Posted on February 9, 2025February 9, 2025 By Devika Agarwal No Comments on Loveyapa Movie Review: A Bold Remake or Just Another Bollywood Nepotism Project?

Loveyapa, the official Hindi remake of the Tamil blockbuster Love Today, has finally hit the big screen. The film introduces two star kids—Aamir Khan’s son, Junaid Khan, and Janhvi Kapoor’s sister, Khushi Kapoor. While Bollywood has a history of launching actors through remakes, does this film offer something fresh, or is it just another recycled product?

Let’s break it down.

Plot Summary

The story revolves around Gaurav (Junaid Khan) and Bani (Khushi Kapoor), a young couple deeply in love. As their wedding approaches, Bani’s father throws an unusual challenge at them: they must exchange phones for a few hours. No passwords, no restrictions—just full access to each other’s digital lives.

What starts as a simple test soon turns into chaos as unexpected messages, hidden secrets, and past relationships surface. Will their love survive this challenge? That’s what the movie explores.

Strengths of the Film

1. Unique Yet Relevant Concept

In today’s digital age, where smartphones hold our deepest secrets, the idea of a phone swap as a relationship test is intriguing. The film smartly highlights modern-day trust issues, online secrets, and the impact of social media on relationships.

2. Fast-Paced & Engaging Storytelling

Despite being a remake, Loveyapa feels fresh, especially for those who haven’t seen Love Today. The first 10 minutes are slow, but once the phone swap happens, the film picks up speed and keeps the audience hooked.

3. Kiku Sharda Steals the Show

Among the entire cast, Kiku Sharda’s extended cameo stands out. His comic timing and expressions add much-needed entertainment to the film.

4. A Strong Social Message

The movie subtly educates audiences about deepfake technology, online privacy, and the importance of transparency in relationships.

Where the Film Fails

1. Weak Lead Performances

Junaid Khan and Khushi Kapoor are still new to acting, and it shows. Junaid struggles to bring depth to his character, while Khushi delivers an average performance. Their chemistry feels forced, making it hard for the audience to invest in their love story.

2. Bollywood’s Nepotism Playbook

This film follows the same strategy Bollywood used with Dhadak—taking a regional hit, remaking it, and launching star kids with a pre-tested script. While the story is strong, the lead actors don’t do justice to it.

3. Dialogues That Don’t Hit the Mark

Some dialogues feel outdated and overly dramatic, missing the natural flow of conversations seen in the original film. The attempt to make them sound trendy backfires, making them cringeworthy instead.

4. Music That Fails to Impress

Unlike the original, which had a memorable soundtrack, Loveyapa lacks impactful songs. The music feels generic and fails to leave a lasting impression.

Comparison with the Original

  • Budget & Profitability: The original Love Today was made on a budget of ₹5 crore and earned ₹83 crore, making it a massive success. Whether Loveyapa can replicate this in Bollywood remains uncertain.
  • Performance Gap: Pradeep Ranganathan (original lead) brought raw and relatable energy to his role, while Junaid Khan struggles with expressions and dialogue delivery.
  • Execution: The Tamil version had a natural charm, whereas the Hindi remake feels like a forced adaptation with less emotional depth.

Should You Watch It?

If you haven’t seen Love Today, Loveyapa might be an entertaining one-time watch. It has a strong concept, a relatable storyline, and some good supporting performances. However, if you’re expecting a groundbreaking film, this one falls short due to weak lead performances and unnecessary Bollywood-style dramatization.

Rating: 3/5

⭐ ⭐ ⭐
✅ Engaging story
✅ Strong supporting cast
❌ Weak lead acting
❌ Unimpressive dialogues

Bollywood’s Remake Formula: Hit or Miss?

Loveyapa is yet another Bollywood remake banking on a proven script. While it offers entertainment, it fails to surpass the charm of the original. Junaid Khan and Khushi Kapoor have potential, but they need to refine their acting skills if they want to leave a lasting mark in the industry.
