Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) Outbreak in Pune: Causes, Symptoms, and Prevention

Posted on January 30, 2025January 30, 2025 By Devika Agarwal No Comments on Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) Outbreak in Pune: Causes, Symptoms, and Prevention

The Maharashtra Public Health Department has confirmed a Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) outbreak in Pune, with 127 suspected cases and 72 confirmed infections as of January 30, 2025. This rare but serious neurological disorder can cause muscle weakness, paralysis, and respiratory failure in severe cases.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune are investigating the outbreak, testing samples for possible bacterial and viral links. So far, the Campylobacter jejuni bacteria has been found in some patients, raising concerns over possible food or water contamination.

What is Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS)?

GBS is a rare autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves, leading to muscle weakness, numbness, and paralysis. The condition often develops after bacterial or viral infections, including foodborne illnesses.

Types of Guillain-Barre Syndrome:

  1. Acute Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (AIDP) – Most common form, starts with weakness in the legs.
  2. Miller Fisher Syndrome (MFS) – Affects eye muscles first and is linked to balance issues.
  3. Acute Motor Axonal Neuropathy (AMAN) and Acute Motor-Sensory Axonal Neuropathy (AMSAN) – More severe forms common in Asia and Latin America.

Causes and Possible Triggers of the Pune Outbreak

According to experts, GBS is often linked to:

  • Bacterial infections: The Campylobacter jejuni bacteria, commonly found in contaminated food and water, is a known trigger.
  • Viral infections: Some cases have been linked to viruses like Norovirus, which was also detected in Pune.
  • Vaccinations or medical treatments: Though rare, some vaccines and surgeries can trigger GBS.
  • Autoimmune responses: The immune system misidentifies nerve cells as threats and attacks them.

Pros and Cons of Identified Causes:

✅ Pro: Early detection of bacterial or viral sources can help contain the outbreak.
❌ Con: In about 60% of cases, the exact cause remains unknown, delaying targeted treatment.

Current Situation and Government Response

The Union Health Ministry has deployed a high-level team of experts to Pune, including specialists from:

  • National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Delhi
  • NIMHANS, Bengaluru
  • National Institute for Virology (NIV), Pune

These teams are monitoring cases, conducting water and food testing, and working on preventive measures.

Testing and Research Updates:

  • Blood and stool samples of affected patients are being tested at NIV Pune for pathogens.
  • Water quality assessments are being conducted to detect possible contamination.
  • Private hospitals and clinics have been instructed to report all GBS cases immediately.

Symptoms of Guillain-Barre Syndrome

Early diagnosis is crucial, as GBS can progress rapidly. Key symptoms include:

  • Sudden weakness in legs and arms
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Difficulty walking or maintaining balance
  • Facial muscle weakness, difficulty speaking or swallowing
  • Severe cases: Paralysis and respiratory failure requiring ventilator support

Treatment and Recovery

While there is no specific cure, treatment focuses on reducing symptoms and speeding up recovery.

Main Treatment Options:

  1. Plasma Exchange (Plasmapheresis): Removes harmful antibodies from the blood.
  2. Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG) Therapy: Boosts the immune system to fight the attack on nerves.
  3. Physical Therapy: Helps patients regain muscle strength after paralysis.

Pros and Cons of Available Treatments:

✅ Pro: Many patients recover fully within 6 months to 1 year with proper treatment.
❌ Con: Severe cases require long-term hospitalization and rehabilitation.

Preventive Measures for the Public

Authorities have issued guidelines to prevent further spread and protect public health.

Food and Water Safety Tips:

✔ Drink only boiled or filtered water to prevent bacterial infections.
✔ Wash hands frequently with soap and water, especially before eating.
✔ Avoid raw or undercooked meat that could carry Campylobacter jejuni.
✔ Separate cooked and raw foods to prevent cross-contamination.

General Health Precautions:

✔ Seek immediate medical attention if experiencing sudden weakness or paralysis.
✔ Follow proper hygiene and sanitation practices at home and in public places.
✔ People with recent viral or bacterial infections should monitor their health closely.

Pros and Cons of Preventive Measures:

✅ Pro: Boiling water and proper hygiene are simple yet effective ways to prevent infections.
❌ Con: It may take weeks to identify the exact source, requiring long-term caution.

Public Advisory: Stay Alert but Don’t Panic

The Maharashtra Health Department has reassured citizens that preventive and control measures are in place. While the situation is serious, early detection and timely medical intervention can significantly improve outcomes.

If you or someone you know experiences sudden muscle weakness or paralysis, seek immediate medical help.
